Cuttingboard

Project context

For T&C Woodwork, I designed and produced a cutting board that combined craftsmanship with functionality. The challenge was to create a durable product that could be made from various types of hardwood, while also offering an attractive and unique aesthetic.

Approach

Following the IPO design process, I researched hardwood types and their usability in kitchenware. I then designed a board in a chessboard pattern, focusing on both strength and usability. The project involved every step of woodworking: cutting, planing, gluing, and finishing.

Tools & Techniques

  • PO design process

  • Woodworking (sawing, planing, gluing, oil finishing)

  • Material research into hardwoods

  • Manual craftsmanship & precision work

Outcome

Reflection

The final product was a fully functional chessboard-style cutting board, crafted entirely by hand. After assembly, the board was carefully finished with oil, ensuring durability and an enhanced natural look of the wood.

This project strengthened my hands-on craftsmanship and gave me a deeper understanding of working with natural materials. It taught me the importance of precision and finishing in product design and gave me a tangible result that combines utility with aesthetics.
